‘My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry’ – James 1:19
In our noisy world, everyone wants to be heard. Social media has given us all a platform, and we’re quick to share our opinions on everything. But what if God is calling us to a different approach? What if spiritual maturity begins with learning to listen first? When trials hit your life, what’s your first instinct? Do you immediately call a friend, post on social media, or turn to Google for answers? There’s nothing wrong with seeking counsel, but God invites us to come to Him first. His Word contains wisdom for every situation we face. The challenge is developing the discipline to pause, breathe, and ask, ‘What does God’s Word say about this?’ This isn’t about having all the answers memorized. It’s about cultivating a heart that naturally turns toward God when life gets complicated. When we’re quick to listen to His voice through Scripture, we position ourselves to receive His peace, guidance, and strength. Today, practice the art of listening before speaking, seeking before sharing.
Reflection
When facing a current challenge in your life, what would it look like to turn to God’s Word first before seeking other sources of advice?
Quote
When facing trials we are quick to hear what other people have to say about it before asking what does God’s Word say about it.
Prayer
Lord, help me to be quick to listen to Your voice and slow to react with my own understanding. Teach me to seek Your wisdom first in all situations.
