‘What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?’ – James 4:1

We’ve all been there – that moment when someone cuts us off in traffic, a coworker takes credit for our idea, or a family member pushes our buttons just right. Our immediate reaction? “They’re the problem!” But what if conflict isn’t really about them at all? James reveals a hard truth: the real battlefield isn’t out there, it’s within us. Our fights and quarrels don’t come from difficult people or challenging circumstances – they come from our own desires warring within us. Think about the last conflict you experienced. Strip away the surface details and you’ll likely find familiar culprits: the desire for control, recognition, comfort, or simply being right. It’s humbling to realize that the person staring back at us in the mirror might be the common denominator in our conflicts. This isn’t about self-condemnation; it’s about self-awareness. When we stop pointing fingers outward and start looking inward, we take the first step toward real growth and genuine peace.

Reflection
What internal desire (control, recognition, comfort, being right) most often drives your conflicts with others?

Quote
The real source of conflict comes from within, that it is really our own desires and our own flesh that is causing us to have fights.

Prayer
God, help me see past the surface of my conflicts to the desires battling within my own heart. Give me the courage to look inward first before blaming others.
