‘Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.’ – James 1:2-3
When life hits hard, our first instinct is often to wonder what we did wrong or why God allowed this to happen. We live in a culture that promises comfort and ease, so when difficulties arise, we feel blindsided. But what if trials aren’t interruptions to our faith journey—what if they’re actually part of the plan? Following Jesus doesn’t mean we get a free pass from life’s challenges. In fact, Scripture tells us to expect them. The difference isn’t that believers avoid trials; it’s that we have a different perspective on what they mean and where they lead. Trials aren’t punishments or signs that God has abandoned us. They’re opportunities for our faith to be tested and strengthened, like a muscle that grows stronger under resistance. When we shift our perspective from seeing trials as enemies to seeing them as teachers, everything changes. Instead of asking ‘Why is this happening to me?’ we can ask ‘What is God wanting to teach me through this?’ This doesn’t mean we have to be happy about difficult circumstances, but we can find hope in knowing that God has a purpose even in our pain. Every trial you face is an opportunity for your faith to grow deeper and stronger.
Reflection
How might your current or recent challenges be opportunities for spiritual growth rather than just obstacles to overcome?
Quote
Trials are a normal part of life.
Prayer
God, help me see my trials through Your eyes rather than my own. Give me the perspective to trust that You’re working even when I can’t see it.
