‘When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.’ – James 4:3
Prayer can become surprisingly selfish. We approach God like a cosmic vending machine, inserting our requests and expecting Him to deliver exactly what we want. But James exposes two flawed approaches to getting our needs met: either we don’t pray at all, trying to be our own source for everything, or we pray with completely selfish motives. The problem isn’t that we bring our desires to God – He wants us to! The issue is when we demand He fulfill our fleshly wants rather than asking Him to align our hearts with His will. Mature prayer isn’t about convincing God to bless our plans; it’s about asking Him to change our desires to match His. When we pray, “God, give me this promotion so I can feel important,” we’re asking Him to finance our flesh. But when we pray, “God, help me desire what brings You glory,” we’re positioning ourselves to receive His best. The beautiful promise is that when our desires align with His, He delights to give us the desires of our hearts – because they’ve become His desires too.
Reflection
How can you shift your prayers from asking God to fulfill your desires to asking Him to change your desires?
Quote
God will not finance our flesh. He wants to give us the very things that we should be desiring. A life that brings honor and glory to Him.
Prayer
Lord, examine my motives when I pray. Help me desire what brings You glory rather than what simply satisfies my flesh.
