‘If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.’ – James 1:5
When we’re in the middle of a difficult season, our prayers often sound like desperate pleas for God to make it stop. We want the pain to end, the problem to disappear, and life to return to normal. While it’s natural to ask for relief, there’s something even more powerful we can request: wisdom. Wisdom helps us navigate trials rather than just escape them. It gives us insight into what God might be teaching us, how to respond with maturity, and what steps to take moving forward. When we ask for wisdom, we’re essentially saying, ‘God, I trust that You know what’s best, and I want to learn what You want me to learn through this.’ Sometimes God does remove our trials, but often He uses them to shape us into the people He’s called us to be. Wisdom helps us see the bigger picture and respond in ways that honor Him and benefit our spiritual growth. The beautiful promise in James is that God gives wisdom generously to those who ask. He doesn’t hold back or make us beg. When we approach Him with humble hearts, seeking understanding rather than just escape, He provides the insight we need to walk through our challenges with grace and purpose.
Reflection
What wisdom might God want to give you about your current situation that you haven’t asked for yet?
Prayer
Lord, instead of just asking You to remove my difficulties, I ask for wisdom to navigate them well. Help me learn what You want to teach me.
